WIMM Wearable Platform: Microsoft SPOT Redux?
Arsenic technology advances, the trend is to hug dru small. That's what Silicon Valley-supported WIMM Labs has done, debuting on Tuesday its modular Android concept, called the WIMM Clothing Political program. This peerless-inch square device has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and supports up to 32GB of memory.
A capacitive touchscreen graces a "bi-modal display." What that means is this: when not in expend, the WIMM device will employ a standard musing display mode, similar to a standard digital watch. Then, when needed, the WIMM gimmick can switch to a color display–this bi-modal display helps conserve battery power.
Android Used To Speed up Growing
WIMM has chosen Humanoid as its platform in hopes that developers will exist more inclined to write applications for the device. Writing apps for the WIMM device will be no different from writing apps for a phone–though, of trend, developers will lack to take the device's 160 away 160 pel screen into consideration. WIMM likewise wants apps to be simple, which should make development easier.
Much "mini-apps" will center on small, bite-sized portions of news–so much as the weather, operating room headlines. WIMM has also developed an app that allows users to shuffle flying payments at Starbucks, so the possibilities seem pretty endless.
Spell apps tail end be content-fat, developers will need to keep in mind that the WIMM gimmick must be paired with a Blackberry or an Humanoid phone to access a data (3G or 4G) web. The device does, however, have got built-in GPS.
Microsoft Was Doing This Years Agone
As caller as the novel WIMM device May sound, it's nothing new. Microsoft was Stephen William Hawking a similar technology to its partners in the form of SPOT, back in 2003. However, SPOT used data that piggybacked connected FM receiving set signals, ready to operate.
While it was undoubtedly a good engineering, SPOT never gained much traction in the marketplace. Issues with delivery the technology to the market, as advisable As a lack of coverage, seemed to kill Espy. The service itself began voluminous down in 2010, and will comprise turned off at the stop of this year.
WIMM may not receive to deal with these issues due to strategic differences, but I consume a feeling it will be as unsuccessful. At the time of SPOT, smartphones were still in their formative stages, and then the technology made a little to a greater extent sense.
Today things are much different. Smartphones are commonplace, complete with richer app experiences than a device like this could ever provide. Also, flirt with how many people wear (or need) a watch any longer.
All this makes WIMM seem like a fairly uneffective concept to me. I'd rather spend the money happening a full-featured smartphone! I guess the question now becomes, "What's the point?" WIMM is going to have to answer that.
